Product Description
The Rhetorical Nature of XML is the first volume to combine rhetoric, XML, and knowledge management in a substantive manner. It serves as a primer on XML and XML-related technologies, illustrating how the naming of XML elements can be understood as a rhetorical act, and detailing the essentials of knowledge management practices that illustrate the need for intelligently conceived databases in organizations.

XML Retrieval (Synthesis Lectures on Information Concepts, Retrieval & Services)

XML Retrieval (Synthesis Lectures on Information Concepts, Retrieval & Services)

Mounia Lalmas “XML Retrieval (Synthesis Lectures on Information Concepts, Retrieval & Services)”
Morgan and Claypool Publishers | 2009-07-09 | ISBN: 1598297864 | 112 pages | PDF | 1.5 MB

Documents usually have a content and a structure. The content refers to the text of the document, whereas the structure refers to how a document is logically organized. An increasingly common way to encode the structure is through the use of a mark-up language. Nowadays, the most widely used mark-up language for representing structure is the eXtensible Mark-up Language (XML). XML can be used to provide a focused access to documents, i.e. returning XML elements, such as sections and paragraphs, instead of whole documents in response to a query. Such focused strategies are of particular benefit for information repositories containing long documents, or documents covering a wide variety of topics, where users are directed to the most relevant content within a document. The increased adoption of XML to represent a document structure requires the development of tools to effectively access documents marked-up in XML. This book provides a detailed description of query languages, indexing strategies, ranking algorithms, presentation scenarios developed to access XML documents. Major advances in XML retrival were seen from 2002 as a result of INEX, the Initiative for Evaluation of XML Retrieval. INEX, also described in this book, provided test sets for evaluating XML retrieval effectiveness. Many of the developments and results described in this book were investigated within INEX. Table of Contents: Introduction / Basic XML Concepts / Historical Perspectives / Query Languages / Indexing Strategies / Ranking Strategies / Presentation strategies / Evaluating XML Retrieval Effectiveness / Conclusions

PHP Oracle Web Development: Data processing, Security, Caching, XML, Web Services, and Ajax
Packt Publishing | 2007-08-03 | ISBN: 1847193633 | 396 pages | PDF | 3 MB

This practical book for PHP/Oracle developers is built around well explained, easy-to-follow example code to build robust, efficient, secure solutions covering popular current topics on using PHP with Oracle. Assuming no special skill level, experienced author Yuli Vasiliev shows how to install and configure PHP and Oracle; connect PHP to Oracle; move application business logic to Oracle; build transactional applications; use security features; improve performance with caching; employ XML features; implement SOAP web services; build Ajax-driven PHP/Oracle solutions. Building and deploying PHP applications on Oracle Database combines the power and robustness of Oracle with the easy, rapid development of open-source PHP to achieve high-performance, scalable, reliable data-driven web applications with minimal effort. Unlike some other databases, Oracle allows building the key business logic of PHP applications inside the database, moving data processing from web server to database server.

Perl and XML

Perl and XML
O’Reilly | ISBN: 059600205X | 158 pages | 1.1 MB | PDF

SXML is a text-based markup language that has taken the programming world by storm. More powerful than HTML yet less demanding than SGML, XML has proven itself to be flexible and resilient. XML is the perfect tool for formatting documents with even the smallest bit of complexity, from Web pages to legal contracts to books. However, XML has also proven itself to be indispensable for organizing and conveying other sorts of data as well, thus its central role in web services like SOAP and XML-RPC. As the Perl programming language was tailor-made for manipulating text, few people have disputed the fact that Perl and XML are perfectly suited for one another. The only question has been what’s the best way to do it. That’s where this book comes in. Perl & XML is aimed at Perl programmers who need to work with XML documents and data. The book covers all the major modules for XML processing in Perl, including XML::Simple, XML::Parser, XML::LibXML, XML::XPath, XML::Writer, XML::Pyx, XML::Parser::PerlSAX, XML::SAX, XML::SimpleObject, XML::TreeBuilder, XML::Grove, XML::DOM, XML::RSS, XML::Generator::DBI, and SOAP::Lite. But this book is more than just a listing of modules; it gives a complete, comprehensive tour of the landscape of Perl and XML, making sense of the myriad of modules, terminology, and techniques. This book covers:
– parsing XML documents and writing them out again
– working with event streams and SAX
– tree processing and the Document Object Model
– advanced tree processing with XPath and XSLT
Most valuably, the last two chapters of Perl & XML give complete examples of XML applications, pulling together all the tools at your disposal. All together, Perl & XML is the single book that gives you a solid grounding in XML processing with Perl.
